The houses refer to place or setting for life on Earth. In this series, I will share some real insider stuff
about each house. The science and the geography of the houses is less important than the poetry of
them. I hope to fill your need for a lightening fast comprehension of your own inner thoughts of the
past, when you had questions about the reality you live in. Perhaps you will be inspired to observe
the stage we all play on, that fiction we call the houses of the horoscope.
    By Lily Satterfield

Welcome to Lily’s House: Do you remember how you started to grow your mind? Do you know when and how
your early experiences shaped you? The mind of a person is only limited by how he can think. The origin of
forces that shape a young mind into adulthood are observed in the third house of the horoscope. The function
of the third house is to describe your mind; now, then and forever. The way the world was configured in your
neighborhood of childhood is a key to understanding your adult symbolism. In tracking the magic question of
who we are, we have to stop by the old neighborhood to touch base with the symbolism.
A listing of the varied and elusive meanings we associate with the third house is available in most astrology
textbooks.  I wish to focus on the mysterious meanings which your reflective meditation will reveal are alive with
symbolic and archetypal forces. You can use astrology to decode some early life memories, and the energy you
liberate will be a welcome reward for re-focusing and re-thinking about your childhood.
Your third house has a descriptive layout of the life you shared with your siblings.  Are you an only child? You
just might have a Saturn in your third house. Saturn ruling or residing in your sector of mind will show you as an
advanced thinker, perhaps a leader, but serious and “melancholy.” You may have been the eldest child in any
case. What is your real relationship with brothers and sister? You were binging status to the family. This is
coded in the local environment of the neighborhood. You might have gone to work early, somewhere near the
family home.  Your neighborhood was a microcosm of the larger world. Here, you meet the symbols you are
ready to meet, close to home.
Do you think you are unoriginal? Perhaps you had an early environment that lacked advantages. Restrictive or
difficult aspects to your sector of mind show stress in the learning environment. Maybe the library was a long
bus ride away, or your school was inconveniently located for you to take part in after school programs.
What if your schools were the best? We might see a Sagittarius or Taurus signature on you thinking process.
Someone in your family thought education was important. You might have Jupiter there, which insures good luck
and advantages in education even without family wealth.
Do you remember fun stuff from your early days, roaming? Were the local orchards subject to your frequent
foraging? Living off the land is learned when rugged signs predominate the third. Aries, Gemini and Sagittarius
describe a mind which knows no patience.
Think back. Was there something about freedom to roam that made you a free and independent thinker, one
who has opinions different from the group? Welcome to an Aquarian mind or perhaps a brilliant Virgo influence.
Boys playing with fireworks is an image that lights up for me. Such boys and girls grow up to be soldiers and
firemen. It all depends on how you think, and what the environment did to shape that thinking. Was it permissive
    or restrictive?
Perhaps you have Uranus or Mars in the third house. You don’t need approval from schoolmates and sisters.
You can’t help but think for yourself. Troublesome but interesting mental possibilities arise here.
Do you crave culture and beauty for your mind? You may have Libra or Taurus on the cusp of the third house.
You have always been called a lazy thinker, but you know what looks good. You have sensibilities toward
aesthetics. Think back, there must have been easy access to museums or perhaps music lessons for you, or art
school to keep your mind busy. Libra here is somewhat of a perfectionist.
One thing an astrologer like me can find out for you is the true relationship between you and your brothers and
sisters. You share a group mind shaped by common experiences in the family, school system, courts, churches,
etc. You were a kid once. Your mind was fresh, and untroubled by previous knowledge. You were new to the
world;  ready to learn and ready to shape your world. I know children influence each other powerfully,  and that
people take hurts and agreements forward into their future. Do you feel a chronic energy loss associated with
anyone? Keep analyzing your past, and important symbols come tumbling out for you understanding.
Perhaps a short story will serve as an example to jog your own memories of the climate and attitudes around
what shaped your mind. I grew up on what resembled a perfect semi rural street. All the houses were separate,
different, and had yards. One family lived in each house. Every house had a car. There were no sidewalks and
few fences. I and my siblings enjoyed freedom,  and we roamed about at will in the abundant open space which
surrounded our neighborhood. We could have ample privacy, and time to explore together as children do.
However, danger lurked in the neighborhood as well as adventure.  I have Jupiter and Uranus together in the
third  house. Jupiter as an influence nearby was descriptive of a large hospital which lay a mere quarter mile
away, as well as my school, which was less than a couple of hundred yards from my house. Uranus is a symbol
for the misfits and rebels of the world. You could say it brought in an element of extremes and technology to the
area as well; modern communication equipment, alarms and large trucks.
In fact, I was surrounded by institutions designed to deal with crisis. In addition to a hospital, our street had a
firehouse and a jail house. At the other end of our street we had a church, a  place to be redeemed if you ran
afoul of the prison or hospital. My street had dangerous predators housed and released from jail nearby. We
would see sick and tottering old people hopped up on medications, pregnant teenagers, etc. You could wander
down my street and find punishment or salvation. What a street for a writer and storyteller!
All of this widened my possibilities and it narrowed them too. I always felt watched, which is unpleasant. However,
seeing police, doctors and firemen every day on my street made me feel protected. I figured that people have
constant problems, and the emergency crews were there to help. My mind was shaped by this circumstance. I
viewed the state’s power as superseding my own free will, and it encouraged my fears, which in turn had the
effect of leading me to have a pessimistic view on my own possibilities in the world.
The environment of my mind was shaped by seeing people who lacked freedom.  The smell of mass cooked
institution food coming down my street reminded me to appreciate my family and the good food we shared.
The sign on my third house is Cancer, and it is the sign most associated with food and home. I grew up knowing
that I could handle seeing people in crisis, people who were different or did not fit into society. I could find my
inner security even while others were in crisis. I learned to communicate in a warm, human way with creatures,
men in uniform, or with those much older than me, or who were from a different culture than myself. My mind
knows no culture or race prejudice, but I suffered a restriction of my mental possibilities by imagining things in
my little fishbowl of life. I was afraid of the world out there, shaped as it was for me by my own early world
environment. Get it? More to come...
    Namaste, Lily
