Transits of Life                                                                                                                                 by Lily Satterfield
Recently, I received a phone message from a subscriber to a national astrology magazine which I work for. I wish I
could capture the tone of smirking superior intelligence in the message, which went something like this:
”I got my horoscope for December for Aquarius, and I noticed that in your magazine, you are calling the Aquarius
sign ‘the water bearer.’ You people obviously do not know your astrology. Everyone knows that Aquarius is an air
sign, not a water sign. You people are not going to get my business in the future, because you are clueless about
the correct symbolism.”
I am sure she is better off without my publication. She, an Aquarius, did me a favor to tackle the most common
misconception about Aquarius. In the symbolism of the sign, they are depicted as a figure holding a jar or pitcher,
and they are pouring water out of the jar. They are handling the pitcher and watching the water pour out of the jug.
The water is a symbol of divine emotions, handled, channeled and released by the figure, which is usually a male
figure. This is correct because Aquarius is ruled by the air element and male polarity. The total symbol is deep, and
I will not go into it here, but suffice to say that the figure is of an angel. As Capricorn resembles the perfect human,
so Aquarius is the symbol of the perfect galactic citizen. They are angelic healers, standing as caring ministers to
the lesser spirits below, those who still struggle with human forms and animal emotions.
The average Aquarian is unaware of his connection to the angels of healing, those ministers of mercy whom he
resembles in an archetypal sense. Instead, our airy intellectual will go on pouring and pouring the divine emotion
from the jar. Aquarius has a sometimes tragic resistance to the very thing he handles for others. Sagittarius is the
clown prince, and Aquarius is a proud associate of Jupiter’s truth telling. Aquarius goes beyond exploration and
adventure. He seems to be a determined messenger of the Galactic truth, a truth he thinks he understands.
But what is an Aquarius, really, and what does he want? He wants the opportunity to help and be a friend. A true
friend is what an Aquarius really is, and they are the best, bar none. No other sign is more supportive and forgiving.
Do you need a shoulder to cry on, or a ride to the store? Your friend will do for you whatever you ask. He or she
loves nothing more than to help. Of all the signs, this is the cutest, most friendly, the most perfect, seemingly like an
angel, Aquarius has a special power to charm and enchant. They are smart and talented, and it is easy to prefer
your Aquarian friend, even fall in love with him, as he seems to live for your call, and dote on your every word. Give
it time. You will find out what the dark side is, trust me.
Your winter born Aquarian friend may be unconscious of her charms and powers. She or he may be out of touch
with their role in shaping your emotions. Most Aquarians are proudly and stubbornly resistant to emotions. They
present a challenge to all signs, but especially to Scorpio and Taurus. To these signs, the airy one represents a
perfect mate and a tremendous workload. Welcome to the jungle, earthly life with its passions and poisons. The
Aquarius thinks he is an Angel, an altogether different order of being from lions, bulls and boars! This is where the
famous elusiveness of Aquarius comes in. They get cornered and claustrophobic when the relationships get too
possessive. They need variety and stimulation in their lives and relationships. It is a mental thing, y’all. Aquarius
Cheryl Crow had a high profile match with the bicycle racer Lance Armstrong. What were the reasons for the
breakup? Commitment issues, and a certain doubt that she could settle down and be a perfect wife to the
traditionally minded athlete. Nevertheless, they parted friends.
The most common situation you will find around Aquarius is that they are friends with ex-lovers. All the other eleven
signs will not be advised to try this at home, but Aquarius lives for this attitude. It is simply advanced, and they are
blissfully unaware of your discomfort at the sometimes shocking circumstances they take for granted. An Aquarius
friend of mine once described a breakfast table scene which could have played well in Aquarian Mozart’s time as a
comedy of manners. At the breakfast table with her was her much younger lover and his mother, who was only a
few years older than she. Also present was her ex husband, who just couldn’t miss any fun, and the former
neighbor, who had a thing for the ex husband. Adventuresome and experimental things happen when Uranus
predominates in the Aquarian makeup. The winter born has a naughty side which doesn’t mind seeing your face
round in shock at something. It is an attitude.
Where life in the material world comes in, Aquarius is the best “anything” you could ever ask for. They excel in all
occupations. Their preferred job description might be "specialized generalist" Aquarians can develop a job or
develop themselves professionally. Remember Abe Lincoln, born on February 12? He is a model of this type of self
education .
Some choose not to engage, preferring the casual schedule of the pigeons, so they can contemplate life without
concern. You never know what the Aquarian will choose. Don’t try to impose your ideas on your friend in the
occupational arena. She knows what she wants and is smart enough to get it, no matter what the career field. Do I
need to be more specific here? The Aquarius will seem so perfect, and they are smart too. Like the Sagittarian,
they endeavor to do everything well. Your friend will study and do research on any subject. The books describe
Aquarius as someone who is excited by a desire to be in a new occupation, never mastering the last one. Our
subject is a daydreamer as much as a hard worker. The ruling planet is Saturn, with Uranus as a co-ruler. It is often
Uranus that becomes the determining factor when an Aquarius is deciding if he is good ar bad. This is where the
famous eccentricity comes in too, as they make up their own social rules in the moment. Most Aquarians think
slightly differently than others. While giving the outer respect that is required by Saturn, our friend may be busy
daydreaming. What is he thinking? He may be dreaming up a whole new system for feeding the poor. Did I mention
that they are very loving and altruistic? He could equally be expending his spare time genius on devising a system
to hack computers. The moral climate and background factors for Aquarius need to be positive, so the young
growing mind can find support for grounding his activities in realistic pursuits that could eventually benefit mankind.
Now we are getting to the meat of the matter, the dark side. What fuels the further eccentricities of the Aquarian
mind? Very few people can tell you much about Uranus. We regard it as a big influence on our friend, the winter
born sign, but we really only know the other ruling planet, Saturn. Astrology has vast and ancient knowledge of
Saturn and its effects, but it is only in relatively recent times we have begun to understand Uranus. Discovered in
the 1700’s, these days it stands as a symbol for the modern world itself, with its instantaneous communication and
mass numbers of people. Uranus seems to relate to a galactic, more advanced civilization. Saturn is the boundary
keeper of the past, the planet of trial and courage, the tester of life in the material world. Uranus beckons us to
contemplate a truly advanced world beyond the survival culture, where we have all of our needs met. This would be
a feeling that we are all brothers and we all are one. An Aquarius can take a Saturn attitude or a Uranus attitude,
and so some seem old fashioned and others seem more modern, more amoral, and more alienated like most of
modern society.
Buit what is the awful dark side? The word alienated contains the word alien. When angry or overwhelmed, many
Aquarians become pronouncedly unfriendly and so very icy, they seem to turn into a visitor from another planet.
What happened to the super friendly guy or girl who lived for my every utterance? Who is this furious horrible
creature whose back I am seeing right now? These very words have been uttered by those who love the winter
born. Aquarians don’t handle emotion well, remember? The Aquarius person who is walking away is doing so as
much to spare you as to anger you. They need space when emotions come up.
Let me repeat. Aquarians need space, both psychic and physical, between themselves and someone they are
angry with.
If you love someone of this sign, be prepared to go through an alienation experience with them, and tough it
through. Don’t let your own pride get the better of you. For you will usually want to reunite or at least part as
friends. Give as much love to your friend as he will permit, and let it go. If it is over, it will be over, but Aquarians are
forgiving to a fault, so if the two of you drift apart consider that you may come together again someday. You will
always know your brotherhood and your connection as if no time had passed.
